Here are some impressive bucks that have been taken with me over the years, along with a bit of a feature on the hunter himself.
Scott Gaebel
Scott travelled from upstate New York and made his first hunt with me back in ‘09. He’s been a pleasure to have in camp, and an even more enjoyable hunter while putting in the hard days on stand. His always appreciative and positive attitude must have something to do with his success on some of the deer he’s had in his scope. Not getting lulled into a lack of concentration seems to come naturally for Scott. When this 203” buck of a lifetime gave him a look, he knew immediately he wouldn’t be able to shoot him his natural right off his rest, so quickly leveled his rifle and shot him ‘left handed’ at about 175y. Quick thinking and great marksmanship!
Greg Walker
Greg & I hunted together for over 20 years, amassing stories to fill half a book…some quite funny, some with less humor! He’s always immensely enjoyed his stand time in the cold, and was is a true appreciator of these big mature deer. This 201” deer was his biggest that he’d taken, but not the biggest he’d seen! Some great memories Greg!
Steve Mattison
Steve has become a household name up here in an around camp. A true stalwart hunter that knows how to put in his time and tough it out through any set of conditions. He doesn’t hunt for ‘score’, but prefers maturity and will shoot what he likes when he sees it. We’ve made a ton of great memories in the 26 years that we’ve known each other, and we’re still goin’ strong.
Dave Sanders
Dave has been a mainstay in our fall camp for almost 20 years! He’s been in camp when some great deer were taken, he’s seen some incredible deer himself, and has put some tremendous bucks on the ground for himself. Dave made the switch from rifle back in ‘14, and now hunts exclusively with his stickbow.
He’s taken 14 bucks here, a few real dandies! He missed a ‘well over 200” deer’ a number of years ago…but I’ll let him tell you the story if you ever get to talk with him!
Mark Bush
Mark has been hunting with me for close to 30 years! He seems to relish all of his minutes on stand, and has amassed enough stories to have his own funny podcast! He’s never seen a mature buck he didn’t like!
John Fullerton
John has gained a reputation in camp as being a pretty selective hunter. He knows what he wants, and won’t pull the trigger to just shoot a deer. The stories we’ve created together in November over the past 25 years are what life is about…making great memories! He’s a pleasure to have in camp and around the lodge, and I always enjoy the truck talk to and from stand during the hunt. He truly appreciates the pursuit of big Alberta Whitetails and all that goes into it.
We still have to click the safety off and put on the ground one of those true ‘lifetimer’ bucks together!
Keith Bailey
Keith has always been one of those hunters truly passionate about big Whitetails and has also pursued big deer in his home State of Texas for many seasons. A keen rifleman that knows his ballistics well, was always ready for when he saw a shooter deer, and saw many good ones in his 8 years with me.
Jim Klimback
Jim had a long great run of hunts with us over the 15+ years he hunted here…then was taken from us far too early! A career pilot that also served his country in the Air Force, Jim looked so forward to his quiet time in the Alberta Bush overlooking some great habitat. You are dearly missed in camp Jim!
Don McMurry
I think about the nicest man to ever set a boot down in Alberta…Don has enjoyed his hunts here immensely. It seems as though he never wants a hunt to end! He knew both of these would go home to Texas with him when he saw them…180.2” & 169.7”
Todd Wood
Todd came into camp just wanting to see a decent deer. Two different times on his first hunt he saw the same 195” buck!…the second time he saw him he made sure it was the last time he’d cross his shooting lane! He backed that up the next hunt with downing a nice mature 166” deer.
Ron Stevens
Ron hunted the equivalent of 22 years of hunts over the years with me, and always showed up in camp with a hardcore dedication and spirit that make me confident he’d be ready when he saw the right deer. More selective than many, Ron would tally many ‘shooter’ class bucks on his hunts that he’d let walk, aways putting himself closer to that ‘bigger one’!
James Ellison
James and his father Benny came from Texas to hunt with us a number of seasons. James and his dad shot matching 150’s one year, but then James had the opportunity to this 185” Slammer 6x6 for his memories and wall!
Tom Stevens
Tommy didn’t hunt with many years, but the seasons he was in camp were memorable. His quiet businesslike approach to getting the job done was enjoyable and confidence inspiring in camp. Tommy also saw a non-typical on a hunt he said “made my 193” look small”!…Oh my!
Milt Nix -
Milt travelled from Texas on a few hunts up here. The year he shot this 192” massive chocolate antlered whitetail was an example for everyone, that letting deer walk on your hunt can lead to a bigger one being in your scope. He let 3 different 140”+ deer walk, before seeing this Brute cross his shooting lane!
